About

SAYDS is a non-profit organization that seeks to make social change initiatives viable, highly successful and deeply transformative for young people that are solving complex social problems. We equip them with the systems thinking skills required to solve complex problems and empower them to be system leaders in their spheres of influence.

Our Mission

To equip youth with systems thinking skills for creating and implementing effective solutions for holistic social change.

Our Approach: We use design thinking, science of learning concepts and various research methods to identify and design methods/strategies that can be used to effectively equip youth with practical skills for complex problems, examining them deeply, and effectively solving them using system thinking skills.

Our Vision

To be a leading organization committed to equipping youth with systems acumen for solving complex problems and deepening civic engagement.

Our model involves equipping youth with systems thinking skills and guiding them through the application of these skills in order to deepen civic engagement. We take systems thinking theories and concepts and transform them to practical applications for youth groups working on social problems.

Tools & Methods

Young people need to be treated as a resource, rather than a resource burden. With the rapidly increasing youth demographic in some parts of the world, concerns have been raised over conditions getting worse: increased unemployment, increased crime, impoverished healthcare. Young people are seen as adding to the problem as opposed to providing solutions for this generation and the next. We see the youth as a huge, untapped and undervalued reservoir of brilliant innovations and solutions.

Complex Problems

There are many complex social problems that, in spite of decades of attempts to solve them, still persist. Hence, a new way of tackling them is needed. This way will require a deep understanding of social systems and the “complex problems” that have plagued the world for so long.

Youth potential

The world has a very large, brilliant and innovative youth population that can solve complex social problems and highly impact their communities if equipped with the appropriate skills. The percentage of youth that is involved in actively developing systemic solutions is quite low due to the marginalization of young people. Their insight is not sought after despite being major stakeholders and the fact that these decisions heavily impact them.

Civic engagement

SAYDS intends to equip young people with systems thinking skills for designing effective solutions for complex problems. Our approach is different in that we use a combination of design thinking, systems thinking, and the science of learning to co-design systemic solutions. This builds self efficacy and breaks the cycle of apathy and civic disengagement.

“The most powerful antidote to the old ways of doing things is this new generation of youth”

Complexity Analysis Toolkit

Most of the social problems that we face are quite complex and so they have been widely acknowledged as ‘complex problems’ since they are resistant to simple solutions. These problems are prevalent in all spheres of social life and we all face them on a regular basis: for instance, poverty, education inequality, economic inequality, high levels of pollution, poor environmental quality, racism, corruption, violence, etc

Systemic Intervention Toolkit

SAYDS uses a model called CABESA to equip youth with systems thinking skills, which stands for Co-Designing And Building Enduring Systems Acumen. It is an innovative approach for equipping youth with skills for solving complex social problems and deepening their civic engagement. It seeks to improve the existing teaching and training approaches that are used to equip youth with such skills.
